Utensils for Canning

These are the things I use.

(PRESS IMAGE FOR LINKS)

FUNNEL, TONGS, AND LID MAGNET
This is a funnel and measurer in one. So less buying there. Plus it fits all canning jars for no mess. These tools are a must. Not necessarily these but these type. I have found these are great. I hand wash so they stay better longer.

LADEL

This ladle is great because it has a lip on the back to stay in your pot and not make a mess on your counter.

WATER BATH
When it comes to a water bath canner honestly you do not need one. If you have a big stock pot that can be used. If you plan on pressure canning just use that for the water bath without the lid.

PRESSURE CANNER

I use this one. But that is so I can stack. You can get a shorter one. But that does mean more time if you have more cans.

RACKS

If you go for the bigger one like me I use these racks to stack in the canner.

Headspace for Canning

Headspace is the space between the top of the food in the jar and the rim of the jar. Leaving the correct amount is essential when canning and freezing.

Canning

Headspace is necessary for a vacuum to form and the jar to seal. Use the amount of headspace specified in recipes. After the food and liquid are added, measure with a ruler or I like to use this. It works as 2 tools in one.

Sterilizing Canning Jars

To sterilize empty canning jars, wash them in hot soapy water. rinse them thoroughly. Place in boiling water for 10 minutes if you live less than 1,000 feet above sea level. If you live more than 1,000 feet above sea level, add an additional 1 minute for each 1,000 feet of elevation.

You can also put it in your dishwasher if it has a sterile button.

Important Safety reminder about Canning

 Always inspect a home-canned jar of food carefully before serving its contents. If the jar has;

leaked
shows patches of mold
has a swollen lid
food has a foamy or murky appearance

Then discard the food so it will not be consumed by anyone or pets.

The odor from an opened jar should be pleasant. If food does not look or smell right don’t use it.
